More and more people in recent years start thinking about healthy lifestyle: physical activity several times a week and a balanced diet. In Turkey, of course, it is difficult to control yourself in an attempt not to eat something tricky, but on the other hand it is a paradise for those who love vegetables and fruits. But we shouldn’t forget that the best flavor and benefit of a particular product can be got only when its season comes.
Today I want to talk about that fruits that taste better in different seasons.
Let's start from autumn: bright and juicy persimmon. Its skin cracks at the slightest touch, and the juice dribbles down your chin. In Russia after eating persimmons, you have a tart and viscous taste in your mouth, in Turkey, this berry is extremely smooth and sweet.
The second favourite fruit is pomegranate. I have never liked to peel it, but the Turks have a special kitchen tool that makes this task as easy as a pie. And voi la! A Ruby coloured treat is on your plate.
Tangerines always decorate our Christmas tables, but in Turkey their season starts in the fall. And the main difference is that they are mostly green in colour, but not bright orange.
I have never adored quince in Russia, but here it is fragrant and very tasty, especially if you cut it into slices and sprinkle it with lemon juice. Better than any sweets for tea.
Ankara pear is round, hard and green, but very sweet. From the distance it looks like an immature potato.
I am not going to tell you about grapes and apples, everything is clear with them.
Winter is especially rich in citruses: oranges, lemons and tangerines.
In the spring they begin to sell cherry (the largest type is Napoleon), strawberry and green plum.
I advice to everybody to try a crunchy, slightly sour plum. The Turks often eat it with salt. 🤔
In the summer you can find almost all berries (of course, it is impossible to find fresh raspberries, red and black currants in the markets, you can only see them in certain supermarkets, and even then they are sold in tiny boxes and at a high price). But cherry, strawberry and mulberry are in abundance here.
Peaches and nectarines are also delicious.
Maltese plum is called "new world" in Turkey, this is a very unusual fruit. The only way to desctibe its taste is maybe a bit like an apricot, apple, mango and pear at the same time.
In August everybody buys watermelons and melons. Of course, it is not always guaranteed that your purchase will be sweet, but usually 8 out of 10 will be up to your expectations.
I wıll tell you about vegetables next time. Boost your body with vitamins and don't get sick! 🍏🍎🍐🍊🍋🍉🍇🍓🍒🍑
